Benji Kirkpatrick and The Excess
18th June 2022 – 20.00 to 22.00
Prolific roots musician Benji Kirkpatrick is well known for being a founder member of big-band folk trailblazers, Bellowhead, a current member of Faustus and Steeleye Span and sometime Seth Lakeman collaborator. Although steeped in folk music from birth Benji developed a passion for the music of Jimi Hendrix and that era. Having toured the music of Jimi Hendrix Benji then decided to bring the “power trio” format of Cream to the folk world with Benji Kirkpatrick & The Excess.
Joining Benji are, Bellowhead bandmate, the unique percussionist, Pete Flood and the dextrous Pete Thomas on electric and double bass: “Having played mainly acoustic music for a long time, I wanted to kick things up a bit with a rocky sound.” With Benji leading on acoustic & electric bouzoukis and guitar, the band stoke up rhythms, riffs and uproarious, soaring melodies; sometimes cacophonous, sometimes stark and raw, at times sensitive, always powerful.
