Art@ACE Space

Work from local artists is exhibited in the two main areas of ACE Space.  Large scale in the hall and ‘regular’ size in the bar.

You can view it at any public events (such as the monthly Unplugged open mic nights and any gig) or by arrangement by contacting Jim Crockatt by email art@acespace.org.uk Any artist or photographer interested in exhibiting at ACE Space should contact Jim.

In the Hall – Jim Crockatt – to 7th September

John Percy - Nodus

Jim Crockatt is a trustee and the Art Director of Ace Space and has been responsible for 60 exhibitions thus far in AceSpace.
It is only through art, the execution and appreciation that we can visit a better place both in expression and imagination.
To that end he is a curator not only of Ace Space but also Arlington Arts and Altered States Open Air Sculpture Exhibition.
He has exhibited sculptures at the Altered States Open Air Sculpture Exhibition, the Base at Greenham Common, Arlington Arts and currently at The South Hill Park in Bracknell.
He is also a wood turner and works in clay on occasion
Painting has become a new expressive venture for him.
He has painted the buildings with bright colours to remind the viewers that when they were first constructed, some were probably painted in bright colours, as eyesight, or lack of, was an issue as spectacles had yet to be invented.
To that end Jim is keen for the town to be brightened up with street art which abounds in Bristol and other towns whose art is at the forefront of the town’s priority.
Commissions for your house can be gladly taken on.
He can be contacted on 07868 754283 and jimcrockatt@gmail.com

In the Bar – Victoria Calder & Melissa Lawrence until 31st July

JONATHAN NEWEY

Victoria Calder

Victoria draws inspiration from the local countryside, her native Scotland and from her travels around the UK and abroad to create semi-abstract colourful paintings in both Oils and Acrylics for the home or office environment, where bright and contemporary works are the order of the day.

In addition to landscapes and seascapes in varying sizes, Victoria intersperses her work with fun and colourful still life paintings detailing items from everyday life and items that catch her eye.

Working outdoors where the weather permits or sketching and returning to paint in her home from those sketches and reference photographs – it is the unusual or the overlooked areas that mostly attract.  Wild and remote places tend to predominate in her work.

She exhibits locally through a variety of galleries and exhibitions in the south of England and Scotland and participates in the West Berks and North Hants Open Studios each year in May.  Ever happy to discuss individual commissions for work on personal projects and can discuss these where a painting is required of a precious place or happy memory.

Melissa Laurence

Melissa is an Australian-born artist based in West Berkshire, known for her bold, joy-filled paintings of flowers and birds.

After moving to the UK six years ago, just before lockdown, painting became a way of finding her feet again. What began as something personal has grown into a recognisable style: expressive, colour-led work that captures fleeting moments in nature, from the flash of a bird to the intensity of a single bloom. Her signature pieces often place florals within vintage English tea tins, a playful nod to her adopted home.

Melissa works intuitively, building her paintings in rich, textured layers and using colour to evoke feeling rather than simply describe what she sees. Her work is often chosen for the energy it brings into a space, vibrant, uplifting, and full of life.

Her studio is based within the grounds of Newbury Riding for the Disabled Association, where she is surrounded by countryside and community, both of which continue to shape and inspire her work.

Alongside her studio practice, she teaches infants, a balance that brings a sense of play, curiosity and movement into her paintings.  She will also be taking part in WBNH Open Studios this May, where she will be one of four artists in residence at City Arts.
